Assessments

All Special Education Case Managers working with students in High School need to conduct transition assessments with their students in preparation for the IEP meeting each year.  Assessment must be conducted in the areas of Career Interests and  Career Skills.  In addition, there should be assessment in the area of Independent Living if the student has needs in that area.  Following are some tools that can be used for transition assessment:​​​​​​

  • The California Career Resource Network (CalCRN)- California Department of Education program which provides career development information and resources to support development of the critical career self-management skills necessary for success in today's world of work.

  • Motivational Appraisal of Personality Potential  (must login) - Take the quiz and get your results.  The free report will give you insight for seeking your future career 
  • Next Steps: A variety of tools and assessments for students as well as videos and tools for

  • Personality Type  - Students answer simple questions to determine their Briggs Myers Personality Type then look at the careers that  match their type.
  • Secretary of Labor's Commision on Acquisition of Neccesary Skills (SCANS)-  The US Department of Labor idenitfied necessary skills for the workplace.  Here are several tools for assessing these skills:
    • SCANS skills-  with space to write in examples
    • SCANS - Pre-Employment Checklists:      
      • Form N (for students with mild support needs-  they can take it by themselves or in a small group, or with one on one support)    
      • Form S (appropriate for students with moderate/severe support needs-  probably would be given with one on one support)
  • Situational Assessment (appropriate for students with moderate/severe support needs)
  • Virginia Career View: A variety of online tools and assessments. Includes military career search tools and career vides in Spanish
