Presented by Dr. Denise DeCoste

Dr. Denise DeCoste is an occupational therapist and a special educator with over 30 years of experience in the field of assistive technology (AT).  For 22 years, she led AT teams for the Montgomery County Maryland Public Schools.  Currently, she is an independent consultant providing training and mentoring on assistive technology for reading and writing and on the restructuring of AT Team services to build capacity.  She has authored journal articles, a chapter for AOTA on assistive technology in schools, the Protocol for Accommodations in Reading and revised DeCoste Writing Protocol.

The DeCoste Writing Protocol (DWP) compares a child's individual performance across handwriting and keyboarding tasks.  It examines spelling performance and writing skills so school teams can make more informed decisions about instructional strategies and the appropriate use of technology to meet classroom demands.
